General Information

The solar system is composed by 8 planets and a star called the sun. I assure you the sun is not a planet. The Solar system is an heliocentric system. It means all the planets gravitates around the sun.
You may know that the names of the planets come from Greek Mythology. Indead, the planets of the solar system have been discovered since Antiquity.

As I said earlier, the solar system is composed of 8 planets. Let's introduce them :

Mercury

Picture of Mercury It's the closest planet to the sun. That's why, the temperature on the surface is the warmest in the whole solar system.

Mercury is also the smallest. Its name is the latin name of the god of messenger of gods.

Venus

Picture of Venus A little bit further, there is Venus. The latin name of the goddess of love. It is also called the evenig star and the morning star.

Earth

Picture of Earth Earth is the third planet from the sun at a distance of about 150 million km (93 million miles) or one AU. Moreover, the Earth's atmosphere is made up of 78 percent nitrogen (N2), 21 percent oxygen (O2) and 1 percent other ingredients -- the perfect balance for us to breathe and live. Many planets have atmospheres, but only Earth's is breathable.
Earth has one moon. Another name for a moon is satellite.

Mars

Picture of the Mars' atmosphere Mars is the fourth planet from the sun at a distance of about 228 million km (142 million miles) or 1.52 AU.Mars isthe name of the latin god of war. It has two moons named Phobos and Deimos. And more than 40 spacecraft have been launched for Mars, from flybys and orbiters to rovers and landers that touched surface of the Red Planet.

Jupiter

Picture of Jupiter Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun at a distance of about 778 million km (484 million miles) or 5.2 AU. On the contrary of the previous planet which are rocky planets, Jupiter is a gas-giant planet. Therefore it does not have a solid surface. However, it is predicted that Jupiter has an inner, solid core about the size of the Earth. Many missions have visited Jupiter and its system of moons. The Juno mission will arrive at Jupiter in 2016. Jupiter is the name of master of gods.

Saturn

Picture of Saturne Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun at a distance of about 1.4 billion km (886 million miles) or 9.5 AU. It is also a gas-giant planet but does not have a solid surface. Saturn has the most spectacular ring system of all our solar system's planets. It is made up of seven rings with several gaps and divisions between them. Saturn is the god of agriculture. Even if Saturne cannot support life as we know it, some of Saturn's moons have conditions that might support life.

Uranus

Picture of the sideways of Uranus Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun at a distance of about 2.9 billion km (1.8 billion miles) or 19.19 AU. It is an ice giant. Most (80 percent or more) of the planet's mass is made up of a hot dense fluid of "icy" materials – water (H2O), methane (CH4). and ammonia (NH3) – above a small rocky core. Uranus has 27 moons. Its moons are named after characters from the works of William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. Moreover,Uranus has faint rings. Waht's more Uranus is a sky deity.

Nepturne

Picture of Neptune Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun at a distance of about 4.5 billion km (2.8 billion miles) or 30.07 AU. It is a sister ice giant to Uranus. Neptune is mostly made of a very thick, very hot combination of water (H2O), ammonia (NH3), and methane (CH4) over a possible heavier, approximately Earth-sized, solid core. It has 6 rings. Moreover Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited Neptune. Neptune is the sea god.

The Dwarf planets

Have you heard about Pluto, Eris and Sedna ? There are three dawrf planets.
